Analyzing a section of a film

Analyzing a section of a film

In this essay I will be analyzing a clip through the representation of age.

The introduction of the clip is being introduced with a steady, wide angles shot of a forest representing a middle age village as most youngsters move to the cities due to the wide opened opportunities. The lighting source of the scene is natural with a high key intensity. The focus of the scene is mostly soft but as it pans towards the characters it changes to sharp, which drags the audiences attention to the characters and limits everything else. We also hear music playing in the background as we are introduced to the scene, with the time of the day being morning heading into the afternoon.

The workers are really sure on themselves and thy show clear understanding of what they are doing. The props represent this. Nearly all the workers have a shovel, which represents hard work. Their body language is strong an upright. On the other hard the girl is unsure of how to start the car. This is represented by the slow dolly camera movement, which focuses close and sharp focus. Another way it’s represented is by the short monologue said by the girl, of how to start a car. One other way its supported is by the background nervous upbeat music, which creates an uncertainty mood. The car crash is represented by a loud sound effect of squeaking breaks and a crash. The camera immediately cross cuts to the workers and the quickly dollies to the girls brother running to the car crash. At this point we again see the girl is young as she is shocked and scared which shows she is inexperienced in the work she volunteered in doing. The lighting at this point changed to low-key insensitivity to create a moody and secretive atmosphere.

The father of the girl is a middle ages responsible man as we are introduced with a middle angle view of his office and then a cross cut to the after poring an alcoholic drink. The drink represents his age being older the 18 as its illegal to drink under that age. At this point the lighting changes from natural to artificial as its much sharper.

The next day is represented by a fade to darkness and then slowly slows music with a fading crosscut to the new day. Dolly camera is being used as its zooms into the girl’s bedroom with what looks like a goodbye present. Crosscuts to the young girl putting her coat on and her bag. This represents her escaping which indicates she’s young and that she doesn’t get along with her parents.

The mother of the daughter walks in the bedroom by shouting her name, which suddenly stops as the mother’s eyes get distracted but the goodbye presents. This is introduced with a close up of the mother as the camera dollies after the mother as she realizes that the young girl has left. She runs to the window as the camera is placed out outside catching a wide angle of the terrified mother. The lighting is natural in the scene but amplified with an aluminum mirror.
